The bear museum

Museum Ladin Ursus Ladinicus

An exciting journey back in time, tracking down the prehistoric bear that inhabited the Dolomites as far back as 40,000 years ago. The Museum Ladin Ursus Ladinicus in the centre of San Cassiano takes you back in time, telling you the intriguing story of an ancient inhabitant of the Ladin region: the cave bear known as Ursus Ladinicus. Original skeletons, the reconstructed cave setting and video installations enhance the exhibition route in this interesting museum in Alta Badia. A separate section, including an important fossil collection, reveals the mysterious legend of the 'Monti Pallidi' (or 'pale mountains', as the Dolomites are also known), and takes you through the amazing geological processes involved in the formation of the Dolomites dating back 280 million years.
